Muizenberg beachfront upgrades kick off
The Muizenberg beachfront refurbishment project officially began this week, from Sunday, 9 February.
According to the City of Cape Town, the western side of Surfer’s Corner along the beachfront, next to the railway line, will be impacted first this week, with work on the small parking area on the seaside of the Muizenberg Civic Centre to follow soon after.
“We will try mitigate the impact, still, a project of this magnitude will cause inconveniences. I request users to please adhere to the signage, to avoid the work areas and to keep their pets away from these in the interest of safety. We are counting on the public’s support and collaboration.” the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews said.
What’s to be tackled next?
The City said that in line with the current upgrades, the public can expect the following to happen next:
- The informal gravel parking area along the railway line will be closed to the public, and fenced off
- The small parking area located on the seaside of the Muizenberg Civic Centre is also impacted by the upgrades, and thus temporarily closed to the public
- There will be no access to the St James Walkway from Surfer’s Corner along the Muizenberg beachfront. Signage will redirect users to the detour to and from the railway underpass at Bailey’s Cottage as well as the rail level crossing at the beachfront
- Construction vehicles will be travelling to and from the construction area to deliver materials on a daily basis
- Dust, noise, as well as traffic delays associated with the upgrades should be anticipated
- Preliminary hand excavations to locate the existing underground services and foundations will commence from Monday, 10 February 2025, on the western side of Surfer’s Corner
- Underground services will be realigned in the informal gravel parking area, and then the construction of the rock revetment at the start of the St James Walkway will commence.
