More flights between South Africa and Australia
The Australian airline Qantas is adding more flights between South Africa and Australia with an extra 130 000 seats for travellers annually.
Qantas has launched its first-ever A380 flights between South Africa and Australia. This will add more flights between South Africa and Australia with an extra 130 000 seats available for travellers annually.
Superjumbo to increase seats available to travellers
Qantas launched its inaugural Airbus A380 flight from Johannesburg to Sydney on 30 September 2024. Markedly, it is the first time that the Australian national carrier has operated its Superjumbo from Africa. It will significantly boost capacity on the route. The A380 will fly up to six times a week, offering an additional 130 000 seats annually between South Africa and Australia, as reported by Airspace Africa.
The airline has a long history with South Africa, dating back to 1948 when it first touched down in Johannesburg. The airline has since operated a variety of aircraft, including Constellations, Electras, 707s, and also 747s. Today, the A380 makes history as the first Superjumbo to fly across the southern Indian Ocean.
The airline plans to further expand its presence in the region by relaunching flights from Johannesburg to Perth in mid-2025, subject to Western Australia’s border agency requirements.
More airlines expanding services to and from South Africa
As reported by Business Tech, the Australian national carrier is not the only airline increasing its flights to and from South Africa.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced that it will enhance its European winter schedule and add two additional routes to Cape Town from 17 December 2024 to the end of March 2025.
The German airline Lufthansa also started operating flights again between Johannesburg and Munich, Germany last month, September 2024.
The new flight between Johannesburg and Munich will operate year-round, with flights scheduled every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday morning.
Lufthansa also announced that its direct flight between Cape Town and Munich will start in November 2024.
Norse Atlantic, a Norwegian low-cost long-haul airline, will be launching flights between Cape Town and London in October 2024, as previously reported by The South African. Their new seasonal flights will start on 28 October 2024, with three flights each week – Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
