Matric 2023: Eastern Cape surpasses 80% pass rate
Despite remaining in sixth place overall for the second year running, Eastern Cape has achieved its highest pass rate in history.
Often expected to be one of the worst performing provinces, the Eastern Cape has shut critics and achieved an overall pass rate of 81,42%.
The province has seen a steady increase since 2021 when it achieved a pass rate of 73%. That soon climbed to 77,3% in 2022.
EASTERN CAPE PASS RATE CLIMBS
Their latest results of 81,42% is an improvement of 4,1%- the second most improved province in the country behind Limpopo which climbed to 79,5% from 72,4% in 2022. An improvement of 7,1%.

HOW OTHER PROVINCES PERFORMED
The provincial rankings for the 2023 results are as follows:
- Free State achieved 89.0%, an increase of 0.5%.
- KwaZulu-Natal, achieved 86.4%, an increase of 3.4%.
- Gauteng achieved at 85.4%, an increase of 1.0%.
- North West achieved 81.6%, an increase of 1.8%.
- Western Cape achieved 81.5%, an increase of 0.1%.
- Eastern Cape achieved 81.4%, an increase of 4.1%.
- Limpopo achieved 79.5%, an increase of 7.4%.
- Mpumalanga achieved at 77.0%, an increase of 0.2%.
- Northern Cape achieved at 75.8%, an increase of 1.6%.
