COVID-19 latest: Cases up 7 338 on Wednesday 8 September
A further 253 people have died from COVID-19 in the last 24-hours from the deadly virus, with KZN reporting the majority of new infections.
The latest COVID-19 figures released by Health Minister Joe Phaahla on Wednesday evening report that cases have increased by 7 338 in the last 24-hours, meaning that the total number of infections that have been accumulatively reported since March 2020 has risen to 2 836 773.
Sadly, over the last 24-hours alone, a further 253 people have died from COVID-19, meaning that a total of 84 152 people have succumbed to the virus since the first death in March 2020. The majority of new infections have been reported in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where a further 1 923 cases were reported on Wednesday, with the Western Cape also reporting in excess of 1 500 new cases.
A total of 2 618 386 have recovered having tested positive for COVID-19, representing a recovery rate of 92.3%.

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded in each province over the last 24-hours on Wednesday 8 September:
- Eastern Cape – 1 251 new cases, 11 457 active cases;
- Free State – 791 new cases; 1 582 active cases;
- Gauteng – 599 cases; 4 997 active cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 1 923 cases; 69 055 active cases;
- Limpopo – 121 cases; 2 056 active cases;
- Mpumalanga – 310 cases; 2 871 active cases;
- North West – 356 cases; 7 121 active cases;
- Northern Cape – 396 cases; 6 642 active cases;
- Western Cape – 1 591 cases, 14 223 active cases; and
- Unallocated – 0 cases, 0 deaths.
