The South African Weather Service has predicted an intense cold front in Gauteng and surrounding provinces this weekend.

Weather conditions are expected to change significantly as a cold front and cut-off low-pressure system will introduce wintery conditions to the Western Cape, southern parts of the Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape from Thursday.

Significantly colder conditions will then spread to KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Mpumalanga
on Friday.

The cold front will reach Gauteng, North West and Limpopo on Saturday, 21 September, according to SA Weather Service.
“Disruptive snowfall and bitterly cold conditions are expected to affect the high-lying areas of the
Eastern Cape from Thursday, spreading to the eastern and southern high-ground of the Free State.”

The cold front arrived in the Western Cape on Wednesday resulting in showers and rain over the south-western parts.

Saws weather forecaster, Lehlohonolo Thobela told IOL that there was a chance of thundershowers expected over Gauteng, Free State and the western parts of KZN on Friday evening into Saturday.

“It is still early days of spring, so we are yet to still receive cold spells over the southern interior of the country due to different weather systems like cut-off-lows, cold fronts and surface high pressure systems ridging along the east coast. Although it is not seasonal for SA to receive snow in Spring, it happens, and it is still possible as we are still in a transition stage from winter into summer,” Thobela said.

Temperatures in Gauteng are expected to drop into the single digits in some parts, SA Weather Service said.
