While we’ve seen a marginal improvement in the murder rate, things are far from rosy when it comes to SA’s most feared crimes.

While police minister Nathi Nhleko’s report on crime statistics contains some glimmers of hope, some of the most reported and feared crimes seem to be on the up.

According to the SAPS, trio crimes — carjacking, residential and non-residential robbery — in the 2016/17 financial year are on the increase. During the same period, however, murder has had a small dip, with a 0.1% decrease.

While sexual offenses have decreased, this area remains a major concern, with an average of 110 rapes occurring in South Africa every day.
