Gauteng residents continue to suffer drastically as they face sharp increases in the price of food and electricity. This also includes constant rolling blackouts, high levels of crime, and corruption. To add insult to injury South Africa has now also been greylisted,” says Nicola du Plessis, DA MPL – Gauteng Economic development.
“Our unemployment rate (in Gauteng) has gone up slightly for the fourth quarter of 2022,” says Du Plessis.

Earlier this year, we raised concerns about corruption in the public sector. Corruption Watch reported the following corruption trends in 2022:
- 27% – Bribery/Extortion
- 21% – Abuse of power
- 19% – Fraud
- 18% – Dereliction of duty
- 15% – Misappropriation of resources
“Given our current greylisting, it will become more difficult for our national and provincial governments to attract investors and secure loans to help grow our economy,” says Du Plessis.
She said the Gauteng unemployment rate looks set to increase, and there is no government intervention to improve the current situation for residents.
The DA will continue to work on exposing criminal acts such as fraud, bribery, and abuse of power that directly impact the unemployed residents in the Gauteng province.
