Eskom has announced a planned power outage in the Cullinan area on Thursday, 20 February, from 9:00 to 23:00. The utility will conduct essential maintenance on its distribution power lines during this time. The outage will affect Aust Verviers, Casa Mia Country Estate, Doxa Deo Edendale Pre-Primary School, Eland Plots, Gem Valley, Kilifi Creek, Nooitgedacht Plots, and The Hills.

Eskom urged residents to remain cautious, advising, “For safety, treat all electrical appliances as live during the outage.

The company also appreciated customers’ cooperation, stating, “We apologise for any inconvenience this maintenance may cause.”

Substation Explosion Leaves Pretoria East with power outages

Meanwhile, a substation explosion on Tuesday night caused widespread power outages across parts of Pretoria East.

The City of Tshwane confirmed the incident through a series of posts on its X (formerly Twitter) account on 18 February. According to the City, a voltage transformer explosion at the Njala Infeed Substation disrupted the 132kV supply line, affecting several areas.

“We are aware of the outage affecting multiple substations and areas in the city. Technicians have been dispatched to investigate,” the city stated.

Emergency Services and Energy Department officials also responded to extinguish the fire and assess the damage.

Restoration promised by Wednesday

Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya reassured residents that the power outage would not last as long as some feared.

“Our emergency services teams have extinguished the fire at Njala Substation, leaving large parts of Pretoria East without power. We will provide further information on ERT once assessments are completed,” Moya stated.

The city has made power restoration its top priority. While some areas may regain electricity sooner, full restoration is expected by Wednesday.

As Tshwane and Cullinan residents brace for disruptions this week, the City and Eskom have committed to keeping customers updated on progress.
