Driver arrested after bus overturns killing four on N2 in KZN
Four people died after an unroadworthy bus they were travelling in overturned on the N2 in Port Shepstone, KZN.
A driver was arrested after the bus he drove overturned on the N2 in Port Shepstone, KZN, and four people died.
The bus was travelling from Eastern Cape to Durban on Saturday, 12 October. The N2 – North and South bounds had to be closed to enable emergency rescue services to render their services.
BUS OVERTURNS ON N2 IN KZN
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport said the driver of the bus was taken to Margate Police Station to face charges of culpable homicide.
The bus will be kept at the Road Traffic Inspectorate offices in Port Shepstone for further examination while the services of highly trained examiners and other experts is enlisted to carry out an investigation.
KZN transport MEC Sboniso Duma said they will come hard on anyone found to have violated traffic regulations.
“As we stated, we will have no mercy moving forward. Reckless driving, drinking and driving as well as cutting of corners will earn those that are on the wrong side of the law a prison term.
“We thank all teams from emergency rescue services, SAPS, tow truck drivers and other personnel who are working with the RTI,” Duma said.
SEVEN LEARNERS DIE IN HEAD-ON COLLISION
The Port Shepstone accident comes just a day after seven learners were killed in a horrific head-on collision between a truck and a taxi they were travelling in.
Emergency service IPSS medical Rescue said tragically, all eight occupants of the light motor vehicle sustained fatal injuries, including seven high school children, and were declared deceased on scene.
The driver of the truck sustained critical injuries, and was stabilised on scene before being transported to a suitable facility for further care.
“The accident will be subject to further investigation, with necessary services on scene,” the emergency service said.
