Closure of Zanzou nightclub demanded amid assault scandal
Calls grow for the immediate closure of Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria, after videos of a brutal assault and torture surfaced online.

The Civil Society movement Not In My Name International has called for the immediate closure of Zanzou nightclub in Hatfield, Pretoria, after videos of a brutal assault and torture involving a group of men surfaced online, as reported by Jacaranda News.
The disturbing footage has sparked outrage and raised questions about the safety and ethics of establishments in the area.
Allegations of Torture and Denials by Zanzou management
Zanzou management responded to the videos, admitting that excessive force was used but attributing the abuse to a now-terminated security company. They denied claims that the victims were assaulted over an unpaid bill, instead accusing the men of being cell phone thieves and alleging an extortion plot.
Despite these denials, Themba Masango, Secretary-General of Not In My Name International, condemned the establishment. “Zanzou’s statement on the matter is an indictment of their lack of respect for the law and the police force, which should have been informed of the situation,” Masango said.
He added, “Given Zanzou’s admission to being accessories to these heinous crimes, it’s chilling to think of the other atrocities they may have subjected their predominantly young and vulnerable patrons to.”
Police Investigation Gains Momentum
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has instructed Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to ensure swift action. Authorities are investigating various charges, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), kidnapping, crimen injuria, and violations of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Masemola called on victims to report incidents at Brooklyn police station or any nearby station, assuring the public that resources will be deployed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The actions depicted in the videos are inhumane, barbaric, unacceptable and degrading,” Masemola said.
Police have also engaged the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to investigate allegations of rape and sexual assault. If any victims are found to have been underage at the time of the incident, charges of child pornography could follow.
Civil Society and Authorities Push for Accountability
The Provincial Commissioner has directed a compliance inspection of Zanzou to gather evidence and assess whether the nightclub adheres to legal standards.
Masemola emphasised, “The law will take its course and that the necessary resources will be deployed to assist in investigating this case.”
Should more stringent measures be implemented to monitor safety and ethical practices in nightlife establishments?
