WATCH: Tshwane employees celebrate Brink’s ousting as mayor
Tshwane employees and councillors cheered and ululated after DA’s Cilliers Brink was removed as the capital city’s first citizen.
Loud cheers and ululations were the order of the day in Tshwane after Cilliers Brink, from the Democratic Alliance (DA), was ousted as mayor via a no-confidence motion on Thursday.
The African National Congress (ANC) tabled the motion and was supported by ActionSA which recently withdrew from the DA-led multiparty coalition government.
TSHWANE EMPLOYEES CHEER AS BRINK IS REMOVED AS MAYOR
Despite numerous efforts by the DA to save Brink, the writing was on the wall as the party and its other coalition partners did not have enough numbers to save him.
The Blue Party also tried to negotiate with the ANC, however, the former ruling party confirmed that it would also be supporting the motion.
Eventually, on Thursday, 26 September, 120 councillors voted in favour of Cilliers Brink’s removal while 87 voted against and one abstained.
In videos circulating on social media, Tshwane employees and councillors cheered and sang as Brink walked out of Tshwane House without “blue lights” while others were recording him.
Unsurprisingly, the ANC in Gauteng has welcomed Brink’s removal and said it marks the beginning of the re-strengthening of the City of Tshwane and Gauteng broadly.
“It is also an early gift to the people of Tshwane , who deserve a leadership that is intentional about bestowing the greatest gift to them – a more human face,” ANC Gauteng secretary Thembinkosi Nciza said.
WHO WILL BECOME THE CAPITAL CITY’S FIRST CITIZEN?
The City of Tshwane has had a number of mayors since the municipality was hung following the 2016 local government elections and four of them were from the DA.
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said it’s important to agree on who is going to be the mayor and they are happy to field Nasiphi Moya as she seemingly knows it better than all the other councillors.
