Scores of people were injured when a City to City bus was involved in a collision with a truck on the N6 near Reddersburg in the Free State.

The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport has advised motorists to use alternative routes following a collision between a bus and a truck on the N6, approximately 15 km south of Reddersburg towards Smithfield.

The fatal crash happened on Wednesday morning, 5 March, and the bus was reportedly traveling from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape.

In a brief statement, the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport said a City to City bus with 33 passengers was involved in a collision with a truck.

The incident resulted in a significant number of casualties, with over 31 injuries reported and a death toll that has risen to 10 confirmed fatalities, although this number may still be unconfirmed.

The Department said emergency services and law enforcement agencies are still on the scene, with the priority being to extricate the last survivor.

WHICH ALTERNATIVE ROUTES CAN MOTORISTS USE?

As mentioned above, a total road closure is in effect, and alternative routes have been provided to divert traffic.

For those traveling from Reddersburg, traffic is being diverted to the R717 towards Edenburg (27 km), then to the N1 to Springfontein (69.5 km), and finally taking the R715 to Smithfield (103 km) to rejoin the N6.

For travellers from Smithfield, the alternative route is to take the R715 to Springfontein, then the N1 to Bloemfontein (140 km).
