LOOK: Joburg crook caught trying to steal a TRAFFIC LIGHT…
Only in South Africa, man. Cops in Joburg were left stunned when they came across someone cutting down a traffic light this week.
Why would you steal a traffic light? A man in Joburg has been swiftly arrested by local authorities, after he was – quite literally – caught red-handed. When Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers arrived at the scene, they were left baffled.
Wait, what? Joburg crook arrested while stealing a traffic light
After finally making sense of the situation, law enforcement officials detained the suspect. He was caught in possession of cutting tools, and had already chopped the traffic light down. The incident took place on the corner of Harrison and Main Street, in the city’s CBD.
A statement has been issued by the JMPD, alongside a post on social media. They confirmed that the male suspect was arrested for ‘tampering with municipal infrastructure’. The Department was also keen to stress that they would not tolerate such ‘lawlessness’ in their metro.
“Caught in the Act! JMPD officers found a male tampering with municipal infrastructure (he was busy cutting down a traffic light) at Harrison & Main Street in Joburg CBD. The suspect was detained at JHB Central SAPS. We assure you, lawlessness will not be tolerated!” | JMPD statement
Strange crimewave hits JHB, as thieves chase ‘elaborate’ targets
This marks a second bizarre crime targeting municipal infrastructure in Johannesburg this week. In a video shared online a few days ago, one suspect was captured on CCTV, climbing a lamppost in a residential area – to steal a STREET LIGHT.
As comical as these incidents can sometimes appear, they are acts of criminality. By all means, the theft of street lights and robots are bizarre in their nature. But it speaks to a much bigger problem in Mzansi. Like many of our crooks, these guys are not concerned by the consequences.
