Ramaphosa asked to ‘bring back Cullinan Diamond’ during UK trip

The Cullinan Diamond, one of SA’s most prized treasures, is still in possession of the British Royal Family. Can Ramaphosa change that?

Brilliant. While President Cyril Ramaphosa is hob-nobbing with British royalty, his electorate back home has issued an elaborate quest. His mission, should he choose to accept the demands of the South Africa public, is to bring back the Cullinan Diamond.

‘Bring back the Cullinan Diamond’

The precious gem is a South African artefact, which was mined and discovered right here in Mzansi. However, it fell into the possession of the Royal Family at the start of the previous century. It has never been returned to those shores, provoking some serious discontent amongst critics.

Of course, taking back what some see as ‘rightfully theirs’ is easier said than done. But would King Charles III be open to relinquishing the multi-million Rand item? Well, it’s not out of the question: The new guy in charge addressed Britain’s dark colonial past yesterday…

“While there are elements of that history which provoke profound sorrow, it is essential that we seek to understand them. As I said to Commonwealth leaders earlier this year, we must acknowledge the wrongs which shaped our past if we are to unlock the power of our future.”

“South Africa… has always been a part of my life. My mother often recalled her visit in 1947, the year before I was born, when, from Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, she pledged her life to the service of the people of the Commonwealth.” | King Charles III

Will the Cullinan Diamond return to South Africa?

Perhaps there is hope: Alas, if these diplomatic channels don’t work, South Africans have another suggestion. Cyril Ramaphosa must simply bring the Cullinan Diamond back with him at the end of his visit. Now wouldn’t that be something…

WATCH: King Charles speaks SEVEN different SA languages

King Charles III spoke of his fondness for South Africa on Tuesday. And he wasn’t just paying lip service. The reigning monarch welcomed Ramaphosa using SEVEN of our official languages – drawing a ‘wow’ of amazement from Cyril himself.

“Welcome, Avuxeni, Dumela, Sawubona, Molo, Molweny, Ndaa. My wife and I are delighted to welcome you to Buckingham Palace this evening. Mr. President, If I may, I would like to give you our belated but very best wishes for you birthday last week.” | King Charles III
