Chiedza ‘Chi’ Mhende became a household name for her groundbreaking role as Wandile Radebe in the popular South African soap opera Generations: The Legacy.

Her portrayal was unique and bold, as she played a male character, a rare feat in the local entertainment industry. But after leaving the show, many fans have wondered: what happened to Chi Mhende?

Chi Mhende’s Time on Generations: The Legacy

Mhende joined Generations: The Legacy in 2015, portraying Wandile, a young man struggling with identity and family expectations. The role was particularly notable because Mhende, a woman, convincingly played a male character. Over time, the storyline took a major turn when it was revealed that Wandile was actually a transgender woman, marking one of the most significant LGBTQ+ narratives in South African television.

Her performance was widely praised for its depth and emotional delivery. However, after being on the show for several years, she eventually exited, leaving fans curious about her next move. According to The Herald, Mhende left Generations: The Legacy in 2019, with her final appearance airing on April 29 of that year. Her departure was amicable, as confirmed by the show’s publicist, Garaatwe Mokheti.

Life After Generations

Following her departure from Generations: The Legacy, Mhende continued to explore her passion for acting and storytelling. She took on various projects in theatre, film, and voice acting. In 2020, she appeared in Netflix’s first original African series, Queen Sono, playing Miriro ‘Miri’ Dube, the director general of the Special Operations Group (SOG), a South African intelligence agency. According to BellaNaija.com, Mhende expressed her excitement about the role, seeing it as proof that dedication and hard work always pay off.

In 2023, she starred in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Geoffrey Hyland. The production, which featured Mark Elderkin alongside Mhende, was a fresh take on the classic Shakespearean play and further showcased her theatrical prowess.

Beyond acting, Mhende expanded her career into directing and producing, showcasing her versatility in the entertainment industry.

Where is She Now?

Currently, Chi Mhende remains an influential figure in the arts and entertainment scene. She continues to work on diverse projects, balancing acting with behind-the-scenes roles. She has been active in theatre productions across South Africa and Zimbabwe, further cementing her status as a dynamic performer.

Chi Mhende continues to make an impact in the industry. Though she appears on television less frequently than before, she still makes significant contributions to the entertainment landscape.
