CITY POWER JOHANNESBURG IMPLEMENTS EMERGENCY PROJECT
In the past few weeks, areas in Cleaveland Substation have been frequently experiencing a power outage resulting from cable theft and vandalism. To fix this, City Power Johannesburg has implemented an emergency project to replace two copper cables with aluminium in the substation.
“As part of this initiative, we will be removing two existing underground copper cables that are prone to faults and vulnerable to theft and vandalism due to their resale value.”
“We will be replacing those cables with two other 1.5kilometre long cables, that are designed to withstand such threats, minimising the risk of future disruptions. The cables stretch from Cleaveland Substation to Denver Benrose Standby Distributor,” said City Power Johannesburg.
There is a currently ongoing power outage at the Substation that is affecting more than five areas. The areas affected are Benrose ext. 2 -14 and the Denver area in ext. 2,3,4,7,8,9,10,11 and 12.
In other news, City Power Johannesburg conducted a routine audit at 45 Derby Road, Bertrams where an internal bypass was discovered during a continuity test.
“This illegal modification allowed the property to consume electricity without proper billing, directly violating electricity regulations,” said the power utility.
The electricity power supply to the property was disconnected to avoid further unauthorised use.
What do you think may be the solution to stop the frequent planned power outages?
