Gauteng’s South African Police Service (SAPS) has attended to a report on 2021 elections ballot papers found dumped in Mamelodi on Tuesday 2 November.
2021 ELECTIONS: BALLOT PAPERS FOUND DUMPED
According to the report, three ballot papers were discovered tossed away before getting played with by school children at Zamintuthuko Primary School in Mamelodi.
The documents were first picked up by the school’s cleaner who later tossed them in a bin before they were again found in a passage with the learners. Police later arrived to mark the spot as a crime scene.
As per the Sowetan report, a resident told the publication that the ballot papers were getting kicked and torn apart by the school kids.
“I rushed to the scene and when I got there, I found pupils gone and I saw the ballot papers scattered all over the place. I was shocked and confused,” said the resident.
PARTY AGENT SLAMS THE IEC
According to one party agent who had been to the school to count all the ballot papers, all the documents were secured and left with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials after midnight on Tuesday.
“I condemn this horrible action and hope the person is found and arrested and taught a lesson,” said the party agent.
Meanwhile, the 2021 elections have so far counted 64 percent of the results. As of 7:24 on Wednesday, the ANC is on course to finish an election with less than 50% of the vote across South Africa. The IEC said it was pushing to finalise 90 percent of the vote by midnight.
