Residents in parts of Hout Bay should prepare for a 10-hour water shutdown as the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate carries out essential maintenance work on Tuesday, 18 February. The disruption, scheduled from 8:00 to 18:00, will affect Bethal Street and Avignon Security Estate.

Maintenance Aimed at Long-Term Water Supply

The City of Cape Town confirmed that the temporary water supply interruption will allow for the safe installation of a bypass on the main water line serving the area. This work is part of the municipality’s proactive infrastructure upgrade programme designed to address water loss and ensure consistent supply in the future.

“The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience,” said the Directorate in a statement.

“This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply.”

Preparing for the outage

Residents are urged to store sufficient water ahead of the planned disruption. The City recommends using clean, sealed containers to ensure safe storage. Once water is restored, residents might notice temporary discoloration due to trapped air in the pipes, but officials assure that this is harmless and will clear up after standing.

The City of Cape Town also reminded residents that the sites where the maintenance occurs are construction zones and off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

“Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer,” the statement added.

The City encourages residents to follow its X (formerly Twitter) account, @CityofCTAlerts, for real-time updates on the progress of the work. Information about water tankers, if required, will also be provided through this platform.

To reduce potential damage or water wastage when the supply resumes, the City advises keeping taps closed during the shutdown period.
