Black Friday in 2024 falls on Friday 29 November 2024, if you haven’t already got it diarised. However, as you may have already realised, for most workers, the date falls exactly on payday. So, to take advantage of some of the fleeting deals on Black Friday in 2024, you’re going to need to politely ask your boss for an advance on your pay cheque. Or you’ll run the risk of going into the red at the end of the month as you binge on that special little something you promised yourself. However, experts say tact is the order of the day when doing so …

BLACK FRIDAY IN 2024

In fact, the Director of sales for retail website OneDayOnly, Laurian Venter, is calling on employers to pay their staff early next month so that they can take full advantage Black Friday in 2024, reports Business Tech. The reality of Black Friday in 2024 is that most South Africans are in a better financial position than they were this time last year.

Wage growth may only be in single digits in 2024, but it is trending in a positive direction at least. And overall economic sentiment in the country is improving – thanks to 200 days of zero load-shedding and successes within the Government of National Unity. So, unlike last year when most prioritised stocking-up on essential household items through discounts, we could see more indulgent spending on Black Friday in 2024.

PAY PEOPLE EARLY

Nevertheless, Venter wants a concession to be made by employers to pay salaries early ahead of Black Friday in 2024. She says this will boost the sentiment of South African consumers and help them fully take advantage of the discounts being offered on Black Friday in 2024.

But what if your employer has not been generous enough to pay your salary early? Well, the law dictates there is zero obligation on the part of the employer to do so. But there is also no harm in asking about early pay for Black Friday in 2024. According to recruiting specialists Indeed, you should follow these four basic steps for the best chance of success:

  • Review the payment terms of your contract before contacting anyone for early payment.
  • Find out who to contact directly. It may be someone in Human Resources (HR). But it’s most likely someone in payroll. Your request needs to get to the correct person.
  • How you contact said person is important. You can prepare a nicely worded email, but you might not get a response in time. Therefore, you should consider a phone call or face-to-face to discuss the matter privately and so the tone is not misunderstood.
  • Always be polite and friendly. As mentioned, labour law says your employer has no obligation to pay you early for Black Friday in 2024.
