Why are female dogs called ‘the spayed’?
The term “spayed” is derived from the old English word “spade,” which originally meant to castrate. This term was likely chosen because the surgical procedure to prevent female dogs from having puppies involves removing their ovaries, a process similar to castration in males. Over time, “spayed” became the more common term to describe this procedure in female dogs.
