Can dogs and cats get heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects both cats and dogs, caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

The disease is transmitted through mosquito bites, as the insects carry larvae from infected animals and introduce them into the bloodstream of other animals when they bite.
