Are white dogs prone to deafness?
White dogs, particularly those with blue eyes, are at a higher risk of congenital deafness due to a lack of melanocytes—pigment-producing cells—in their inner ears.
These cells play a crucial role in the development of the cochlea, which is responsible for hearing. When absent, the cochlea can deteriorate shortly after birth, leading to permanent deafness. This condition is most commonly seen in breeds such as Dalmatians, Bull Terriers, and Australian Cattle Dogs, especially those with a predominantly white coat.
While not all white dogs are deaf, breeders and veterinarians often recommend hearing tests, like the BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test, to detect any hearing impairments early on.
Stay healthy and keep those furry friends happy!
