The weekend is nearer than you think and the weather is so perfect, you can’t go without inviting some friends over for a meal. Or, you’re just planning a lovely day under the sun with snacks and drinks by the pool or in the park. Did you know that you can have super tasty snacks that are also very good for you? These sensational healthy tapas and dips are going to change your braai day starters and picnic snacks for the the future.

Sensational healthy tapas suggestions

Homemade hummus is not just a protein and fibre-packed dip for snacks but also spread for slices of bread and crackers. Guacamole is that classic Mexican avocado dip that’s zesty and spicy which goes incredibly on your toast for breakfast with an egg too if you store it correctly by placing it in the fridge with the plastic pressed down on top. The cream cheese dip is also perfect for any snacks you’ve got ready on the snack table before your next big weekend braai or while everybody’s watching the rugby.

Ingredients

  • Hummus (Greece)
  • 1 can 1 chickpeas

  • 1 1 lemon

  • 1 cloves 1 garlic

  • ½ tsp ½ cayenne pepper

  • 2 tbsp 2 olive oil

  • 1 tbsp 1 tahini

  • Guacamole (Mexico)
  • 4 medium 4 avocados

  • ½ ½ onion

  • 1 1 lemon

  • 1 tbsp 1 ginger

  • 4 4 spring onions

  • 1 1 jalapeño

  • 2 2 peppadews

  • 1 tsp 1 cayenne pepper

  • salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tbsp 1 chilli flakes

  • 1 tsp 1 smoked paprika

  • Cream cheese dip (Germany)
  • 1 tub 1 cream cheese at room temperature

  • ½ ½ onion

  • 1 tsp 1 rosemary and olive spice

  • 1 tbsp 1 mustard sauce, or 1 teaspoon mustard powder

  • smoked paprika

Method

  • For the hummus
  • squeeze lemon, drain and remove the pips.
  • Cut garlic open and take out small core root inside (it is the core that causes the bitter after taste.
  • Place all ingredients together and blend with a blender. Taste if it is a bit dry, you can add more olive oil and lemon juice.
  • Add more cayenne pepper if needed.
  • Place hummus in a bowl in the fridge.
  • For the guacamole
  • Cut all the avocados into pieces, keeping one half aside for garnishing.
  • Squeeze the lemon for its juice and drain the pips.
  • Cut garlic open and take out the small core root inside.
  • Add the lemon juice to the avocados and “mash” with a fork until it becomes a chunky paste.
  • Cut all the spring onions, ginger, garlic and onion and pepperdews into small pieces to make a finely chopped salsa.
  • Add to the avocado mix, add spices.
  • Sprinkle with chilli flakes.
  • If you need it spicier, add more chillies. Set aside until ready to eat.
  • For the cream cheese dip
  • Chop the onion very finely, add mustard and spices, mix together with the cream cheese. Add smoked paprika and honey to taste. Set out the three dips with your tapas and enjoy.

Notes

  • Serve to the family with Pretzels, Tortillas and Ciabatta Bread.
  • To make it healthy, Serve with Fish of your choice, I used smoked snoek.
