The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Midlands is a treasure trove of rolling green hills, artisanal markets, and quaint villages.

While popular spots like the Midlands Meander draw plenty of visitors, there are lesser-known hideaways that offer an equally enchanting experience.

1. Cascades Waterfall

While Howick Falls is the well-known showstopper, the nearby Cascades Waterfall is a quieter, lesser-visited gem.

It’s an easy walk through the Howick Falls Conservancy area, leading to a serene spot where you can relax beside the cascading water.

2. Benvie Garden

A botanical wonder tucked away in the Midlands, Benvie Garden is a privately-owned estate renowned for its impressive collection of indigenous plants and birdlife.

The garden is especially vibrant during spring, with azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons creating a riot of colour. It’s a serene escape for nature lovers and photographers alike.

The garden is open to the public for certain times of the year and the generous lawns allow for lovely picnics.

3. Fort Nottingham Museum

Tucked away in the picturesque village of Fort Nottingham, this charming museum offers a glimpse into the area’s colonial past.

It tells the story of the British settlers and their attempts to safeguard their land from cattle rustlers. The museum is small but rich with history and is surrounded by scenic walking trails that are perfect for an afternoon stroll.

4. Karkloof Canopy Tour

While the Karkloof Falls is a well-known natural wonder, the canopy tour offers a different perspective of the indigenous forest.

The tour features 12 platforms connected by 10 thrilling zip-line slides, with the longest stretching an impressive 200 meters. Each tour lasts around two hours and is a safe, enjoyable experience suitable for adventurers aged 6 to over 80.

It offers unparalleled views of waterfalls, birdlife, and lush greenery.

5. THE OLD MUSHROOM FARM

Tucked away off the Midlands Meander, The Old Mushroom Farm features quirky art installations, beautiful gardens, and a vibrant atmosphere.

You can wander around the grounds, admire the unique architecture, and soak up the artistic vibe. It’s a great spot to take photos, relax, and experience the more offbeat side of the Midlands.
