Like many South Africans, The Kiffness is shocked and saddened by SABC’s axing of popular Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan.
The Cape Town muso – real name David Scott – shared his thoughts on Twitter.
On Monday, 17 July, the public broadcaster revealed that it would not renew the next season of the soapie. The award-winning soapie – in its 22nd season- will officially come to an end in December 2023.

THE KIFFNESS SPOOFS CHARLIZE’S COMMENTS
Responding to the SABC’s statement, The Kiffness responded: “As one of the 44 remaining Afrikaaners in the world, this is a massive blow to me and my other 43 fellow Afrikaaners”.
The hitmaker is referring to comments made by SA-born actress Charlize Theron who hailed Afrikaans as a “dying language.”
In November 2022, the Benoni-born star spoke to the podcast SmartLess, where she claimed that she had to learn English “from scratch” after moving to the US at age 19.

In comments that irked her home country, she added: “There are about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language.”
While The Kiffness was obviously joking, 7de Laan has remained a popular soapie for both Afrikaans and non-Afrikaans-speaking people since its creation in 2000.
The SABC said in its statement: “Many South Africans have also learned to speak Afrikaans because of 7de Laan by listening to the langue and reading the English subtitles”.

AFRIKAANS COMEDIAN SADDENED BY ‘7DE LAAN’ NEWS
Apart from The Kiffness, Afrikaans comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout also spoke out about his 7de Laan heartbreak.
He said in a clip posted on his social media. “It’s sad for me not only because of the sentimental value but the difference it made in the country.”
