Luke Fleurs’ family gather at petrol station where he died [watch]
‘Justice for Luke Fleurs’: Family and friends of the slain Kaizer Chiefs star had an emotional gathering at the scene where he died.
Family and friends of late Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs gathered at the place where he tragically lost his life – a Shell petrol station in Honeydew, Johannesburg.
In touching scenes posted on social media, the group of mourners were seen holding hands and forming a circle where the soccer star was shot in the chest at close range.
Luke was driving his VW Golf 8 GTI when two armed hijackers ambushed him.
The bubbly footballer had signed a deal moving from SuperSport United to Amakhosi late last year but had yet to make his playing debut.
LUKE FLEURS’ FAMILY AND FRIENDS GATHER AT PETROL STATION
In pictures posted on Instagram, the group – which included Luke Fleurs’ family members and friends – gathered at the Shell petrol station to pay their last respects.
The petrol station is located on 14th Avenue at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and has previously been marked as a hijacking hotspot, reports the Citizen.
The group held hands as they said a prayer for the slain star, who was just 24 years old.
According to Luke’s sister Sydni, the group held a prayer session and left flowers, balloons, and candles at the scene.
“Justice for Luke Fleurs” reads a hashtag on one of the posts.
Meanwhile, Shell Downstream South Africa has also spoken out on Luke’s murder, which took place at one of its stations.
Spokesperson Pam Ntaka told Sunday World: “We remain committed to working with the authorities and supporting their investigation. But we want to respect the privacy of the family, and we do not want to jeopardise the police investigation.”
According to Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a case of murder and car hijacking has been opened for investigation. No arrests have been made yet.
‘TRAUMATISED’ AFTER HIJACKING
According to one social media user who stopped at the same Shell petrol station, attendants on duty the night Luke Fleurs was shot were “traumatised” after the incident.
Meanwhile, Sunday World claims Luke Fleurs attempted to fight off his hijackers when he was shot in the chest.
According to an anonymous source, the Kaizer Chiefs star was pulled out of his car by the hijackers, who had followed him to a Honeydew petrol station in a white BMW 1 Series.
The source said: “The two hijackers got into his car, and as they were about to drive off with Fleurs’ car, he ran towards it and fought those hijackers.
“He ran to his car, grabbed the door, and tried to remove the hijacker, who was in the driver’s seat.
“He fought them and tried to drive his car, almost knocking into the petrol station’s walls. They overpowered him, and one of them shot him at close range in the left side of his chest.”
