Slain Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs had two other passengers in his red VW Golf 8 GTI when two hijackers attacked him at a Constantia service centre in Florida, Roodepoort, in Johannesburg, on Wednesday night.

According to a source who spoke to Sunday World, the former SuperSport talisman did all he could to prevent the hijackers from stealing his car.

HOW KAIZER CHIEFS DEFENDER LUKE FLEURS LOST HIS LIFE

Video footage, which has been handed over to the police, reportedly reveals that Fleurs had two passengers in his car that fateful. When two men who were in a white BMW 1 Series (used as a getaway car) got out to attack Fleurs, two others remained inside the car. At that moment the two young boys in Fleurs’ car got out of the vehicle and ran towards the back of the petrol station to hide.

The source revealed that the footballer fought the two armed hijackers with his bare hands before one of them shot him.

“During the scuffle, Fleurs yelled, ‘No malome, you cannot do this,’ to the hijacker in the driver’s seat. They overpowered him, and one of them shot him at close range in the left side of his chest,” said the source.

In a statement on Thursday, Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel, Mavela Masondo, revealed that Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical care centre, where he was certified dead on arrival. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Fleurs was born in Mitchells Plain and moved to Fish Hoek after signing with Ubuntu Academy in 2013, which he represented in the National First Division.
