After Elon Musk announced that he is selling his last remaining house to fund a colony on Mars, the South African-born billionaire took his house off the market in a rather unexpected move.

Elon Musk takes his ‘last remaining house’ off the market

Earlier this year, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that he has decided to sell the last house he owned which is located in California’s Bay Area. At the time he wanted the “special place” to go to a large family who will reside there.

Musk initially listed the mansion for $37.5 million (about R555 million) in June in a bid to offload all his property, but the listing was pulled down last week, on 11 September, according to Zillow records. While there seemed to have been no active push to sell the property as it was listed without an agent, the couple of months the home spent on the market speak to Musk’s larger plan to offload all his assets.

A colony on Mars?

Business Insider South Africa reports that Musk pledged to sell “all physical possessions” in 2020 to fund the colonisation of Mars.

“Yeah, sold my houses, except for 1 in Bay Area that’s rented out for events,” he said. “Working on sustainable energy for Earth with Tesla & protecting future of consciousness by making life multi-planetary with SpaceX. Also, AI risk mitigation with Neuralink & fixing traffic with Boring.”

Bay views, a pool, hiking trails, canyons and more

The New York Post has since reported that the mansion is made up of nine bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, the home spans 16 000 square feet.

The listing also stated: “Over 100-year-old mansion with unobstructed Bay views, pool, hiking trails, canyons & reservoir. Ballroom, banquet dining room and preserved but completely updated professional kitchen. Detached 3-car garage, 8-car carport, and tremendous motor court parking.”

This property is different from all the others because it’s not in Los Angeles. It’s in Hillsborough, halfway between San Francisco and San Jose.

As for where Mush resides, it was rumored that Musk was living in a 375-square-foot prefab house on the SpaceX launch site in Texas after he tweeted in June:

“My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though.”
