The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 5 warning for thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape.

LEVEL 5 WEATHER WARNING

The weather service said the Level 5 weather warning is valid between 12:00 and 23:59 on Wednesday, 22 December.

The expected turbulent weather is the result of a cut-off low and surface trough over the western interior of South Africa. The conditions are predicted to bring showers and thundershowers to the Eastern Cape.

“There is a chance that the expected storms may be severe and result in heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning,” said the weather service.

The affected municipalities include Sarah Baartman, Amathole, Chris Hani, OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi and Alfred Nzo.

The province will also be affected by a lesser Level 2 weather warning on Tuesday, 21 December. “There is a possibility that the expected storms may become severe and result in heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning over the northern parts of the province.”

POTENTIAL IMPACTS INCLUDE:

  • Damage to infrastructure, settlements, property and vehicles.
  • Flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas.
  • Traffic disruptions.
  • Electricity supply and communication disruptions.
  • Danger to livestock and disruption to livelihoods.
