Mnet confirms ‘Gqeberha: The Empire’ cancellation
Mnet has confirmed that its isiXhosa telenovela, ‘Gqeberha: The Empire’ which airs on Mzansi Magic has been canned.
Mnet has confirmed that the Eastern Cape-based telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire has been cancelled.

Mzansi Magic has pulled the plug on its isiXhosa telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire after two years.
Shirley Adonisi, director of local entertainment channels at Mnet tells Sowetan: “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the producers, cast, and crew of Gqeberha: The Empire.”
“Their unwavering dedication and exceptional talent have delivered spellbinding storylines in one of the most fiercely competitive prime time slots.”
“As we approach the grand finale, we eagerly anticipate witnessing the culmination of this extraordinary journey.”
BRCSA reported in August that the Mzansi Magic’s telenovela received 570 793 viewers after My Brothers Keeper with 574 191.
MNET RENEWS TELENOVELA: SEASON TWO
DStv renewed the popular isiXhosa telenovela, Gqeberha: The Empire for a second season in December 2023.
“The much-anticipated season, which is already in production, will see some exciting changes and additions to the cast as well as a story line that will grip viewers’ imagination and exceed expectations,” said the channel in 2023.
The channel added that season two would give renewed meaning to the word ‘commitment’ when the dynamics of the Mxenge family, their empire will have viewers wondering what is coming next.
The show introduced award-winning actor Bongile Mantsai as Luzuko’s brother, Hlumelo Mxenge after the departure of Mbulelo Grootboom.
Actress Akhenime Mfenyana who portrayed the role of Anathi Mxenge also exited the show in April 2024.
In February 2024, the show also lost award-winning actress Zikhona Sodlaka who portrayed the leading role of Bulelwa Mxenge.
Former Skeem Saam actor Oros Mampofu also replaced Phila Madlingozi for the role of Ntando Mxenge in season two.
