Thuli Madonsela, Zoleka Mandela, Gcina Mhlophe and 13-year-old Zulaikha Patel are among those being celebrated as some of the world’s most inspirational and influential women by the BBC this year.
Patel made headlines when she led a protest against discriminatory hair policies at Pretoria Girls High earlier this year. Mandela is an activist and a cancer survivor while Mhlope is a South African author, playwright and poet.
The series was first introduced in 2013 following a gang rape in Delhi in 2012. BBC editor Fiona Crack was inspired to create a series that focussed on the challenges and achievements by women across society.
