Unclear OUTLOOK for April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants
No news isn’t exactly good news for April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants, which are still to be confirmed for annual increases. Here’s more …

More than 13-million beneficiaries with young children await word on April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants. March 2025 has seen an unprecedented series of events that’s left next month’s South African Social Security Agency grants unconfirmed. Unbelievably, with annual increases pending in just three weeks, the agency is yet to announce April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants disbursement amounts or even dates.
Grant beneficiaries have been very poorly treated so far in 2025, especially regarding the chaotic SASSA/Postbank card migration. Around the country, only 1.2-million out of 3-million affected SASSA beneficiaries have had their cards successfully transferred from gold to black in time for the ‘impossible’ Thursday 20 March 2025 deadline.
APRIL 2025 SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANTS

However, even though the old gold cards will stop working in two-weeks’ time, your April 2025 SASSA Child Support grant will not be in jeopardy. SASSA and Postbank confirmed that beneficiaries can make alternative arrangements to withdraw SASSA grants at any SA Post Office branch around the country.
Moreover, parliament heard from a special committee this week that more than 140 000 SASSA card swaps still need to take place per day if it hopes to meet the deadline. According to Postbank’s own figures, the state-owned entity has barely been able to transact 10 000 cards swaps daily. Long queues, poor service, card shortages and systems being offline have only heightened tensions.
UNCONFIRMED APRIL 2025 INCREASES

However, perhaps the greatness unknown about April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants is when they will be paid. And how much the still-unconfirmed annual increases will be. The last official day for SASSA Childcare disbursements was yesterday, Thursday 6 March 2025. Summarily, R2 190 was paid out for SASSA Care Dependency, R1 190 for SASSA Foster Child and R530 for Child Support. Of course, the uncertainty over April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants all depends on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s upcoming Budget Speech. If the Treasury can raise the R60 billion it says it needs, then April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants should be in good shape.
NEXT MONTH’S CHILDCARE GRANTS

Nevertheless, with April 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants just three-weeks’ away, anything we say about increases and payment dates will only be speculative. So, instead, let’s share what we do know for sure about applying for government assistance for your child. Firstly, only one parent (if married) may claim a grant for any child (under the age of 18). However, there are some big benefits to putting a newborn child onto the grant scheme as soon as possible.
If you add your newborn from birth and run the SASSA grant all the way to their 18th birthday, that household will receive approximately R135 480. Note that this factors in estimated annual grant increases of roughly 5% per annum. Better still, the agency wants to see more young parents with newborns applying for the benefit. Unlike grants trying to exclude applicants, mothers with newborns are being asked to urgently apply for SASSA Child Support.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Firstly, you must register your newborn with the Department of Home Affairs as soon as possible.
Then you must pass the following means tests for each:
- Earn less than R8 800 per month if you’re married (R105 600 annually).
- Earn less than R4 400 per month if you’re single (R52 800 annually).
Applications can take up to three months to be processed, however, you will be backpaid funds to the date of your application.
After receiving an unabridged birth certificate and ID document for your child from Home Affairs, visit the SASSA service portal. Follow the prompts and make an appointment online.
Once you’ve done that, visit the SASSA branch in-person and bring following documents along with you:
- Official birth certificate and ID of your child.
- Valid identity documents of both the applicant (child) and spouse (if married).
- Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
- Proof of income (you and your spouse).
- Approved three-month bank statement (no older than three-months).
- Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).
Mentally or physically disabled children and foster children also get government support. They require additional paperwork from a government-appointed doctor. And only a court-appointed foster parent may apply for a Foster Child grant.
