Underdressed? Why Zelensky never wears suits
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky was bashed over his dress code while debating Donald Trump in the White House. Here’s why he shuns suits.
Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a public scolding over his dress code at the White House in his meeting with US President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance.
The heads of state clashed in a heated debate in the Oval Office on Friday, 28 February.
ZELENSKY SHUNS A SUIT TO WHITE HOUSE: HERE’S WHY…
Upon his arrival at the White House, the US President complimented President Zelensky on his choice of clothing: an all-black look consisting of a buttoned-down shirt and chinos.
On his shirt was a three-pronged spear, which is visible on its coat of arms and is a national symbol of Ukraine.
The 47-year-old leader of war-tore Ukraine notably shunned a formal suit, which is the unofficial dress code of presidents.
“You’re all dressed up,” Trump said to his guest.
However, inside the White House, things quickly soured between the duo and Trump’s right-hand man, JD Vance.
During a question-and-answer session with the media, one reporter asked Zelensky, “Why don’t you wear a suit? Do you own a suit?”
Zelensky fired back, “Do you have a problem?” to which the reporter responded, “A lot of Americans have a problem with people who don’t respect the dress code of the Oval Office.”
The agitated Ukrainian President added: “I will wear a (suit) costume after this war finishes, yes. Maybe something like yours, yes, maybe something better. I don’t know, we will see. Maybe something cheaper. Thank you”.
Zelensky has previously spoken of his decision to shun formal attire amid the Russian invasion of the country.
He is often spotted wearing military regalia in public.
WHAT ABOUT ELON MUSK?
With public scrutiny of President Zelensky’s dress code, other critics have questioned why US cabinet member Elon Musk also shuns a suit.
The South African-born billionaire heads up Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency. During his public appearances at the White House, the 53-year-old has been spotted wearing T-shirts and caps.
