SASSA Gold Cards will be blocked after deadline – What to know

SASSA has issued an important statement to its grant beneficiaries regarding the expiration of the Gold Cards.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has finally communicated to its beneficiaries on what they need to do regarding Gold Cards.

This is after Postbank initially informed grant recipients in a social media post about the deadline to replace Gold Cards. SASSA and Postbank have now issued a joint statement informing beneficiaries to urgently switch to the Black Card.

SASSA CONFIRMS GOLD CARDS DEADLINE

The joint statement issued 7 February 2025 urged beneficiaries to replace their Gold Cards. It said this is the last month recipients will be able to use these cards to receive payments. The statement also confirmed that the deadline and the need for beneficiaries to switch.

“SASSA and Postbank appeal to social grant beneficiaries to replace their SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards by 28 February 2025,” it read.

SASSA GOLD CARDS WILL BE BLOCKED

The agency specifically highlighted that February was the last month recipients were able to get paid using Gold Cards. If they don’t switch to the Black Card they won’t be able to get their SASSA grants.

“After this deadline, Gold Cards will not function to withdraw cash from all ATMs and retailers. They will also not be allowed for transactions such balance enquiries, printing of statements or retail purchases as they will be blocked,” said the statement.

GOLD CARDS WILL STOP WORKING IRRESPECTIVE OF THE EXPIRY DATES ON THEM

According to Postbank CEO, Nikki Mbengashe, the Gold Cards will stop working irrespective of the date on them.

“We appeal to beneficiaries that have not yet switched to Postbank Black cards to take the opportunity and get the new cards before the deadline. All current SASSA Gold Cards in everyone’s possession will stop working on 28 February 2025, irrespective of the expiry date written on the card.

“Please go to your nearest Postbank site, which is mainly located at one of the retailers near you. That includes Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave and Boxer.”

BENEFICIARIES ASKED TO NOT WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE

SASSA Acting CEO, Themba Matlou, appealed to grant beneficiaries to do the switch immediately.

“Our appeal to social grant beneficiaries is that they should not wait for the last minute, or for when their cards stop working. They must get their Postbank Black Cards now at their nearby card replacement site,” he said.
