CAPE GANG VIOLENCE: Two teens killed in Lavender Hill
The police in Steenberg are investigating two counts of murder involving two teenagers who were killed in a gang-related shooting.
Two teenagers, a 13-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, were killed in an alleged gang-related shooting in Lavender Hill. The shooting occurred on Hilary Drive, at approximately 19:00 on Tuesday, 17 December.
According to EWN, provincial spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said it is alleged that the suspects were driving a white Toyota Corolla when they shot the teenagers.
“The motive is believed to be gang-related. There is currently gang conflict between local gang groupings in the area,” he said.
VIDEOS OF THE DECEASED BODIES DISCOVERED
According to IOL, the police on duty responded to a call about two people who were shot. The police found the bodies of the deceased with gunshot wounds to the head, with the male having additional gunshot wounds to both legs.
The videos of their dead bodies were all over social media. Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), Nicola Small, said they condemned the incident of violence, especially as it was perpetrated against children.
She stated, “We support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the investigation and appeal to anyone with information to contact Steenberg SAPS or Crime Stop.”
“We appeal to anyone with information about this fatal incident to kindly contact Crime Stop at 086 0010 111 or through the MySAPS mobile application anonymously,” he explained.
ANOTHER GANG-RELATED INCIDENT
On 4 August 2024, eNCA reported that two teenage brothers who lived close to the area of Lavender Hill were shot dead on a Saturday morning. The teenage brothers were aged 14 and 17 when they were killed in a suspected gang violence incident.
One community member expressed how sad she was at the children’s deaths.
“It’s just sad to lose your life at that age and (sigh) and I can just put it in God’s hands,” the community member said.
Lavender Hill and Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair Gavin Walburgh said that having two young children roaming on the road at 6:30 am is worrying.
He added that when people ask what they are doing about the situation, he has an immediate question directed at the parents of young children.
“Do they know where their children are, first of all? I mean it’s easy to say what is the CPF doing, what’s the police doing, what’s the community organisations doing but what are the parents doing,” he asked.
