Crime stats reveal at least 31 LEARNERS ARE alleged RAPISTS

While rape or sexual assault occurring in schools continues to shock the public, the perpetrators of the crime is equally surprising.

On Friday, Police Minister Bheki Cele, announced the latest police crime stats. Amongst all the stats, they also revealed that an overwhelming majoring of the alleged perpetrators of rape in school are by fellow learners.

According to the statistics, 61 rape cases were reported in educational premises (including universities) between October and December 2023.

Of the 61 cases, 44 cases took place in schools (primary and high school and special schools). 31 of the 44 school rape cases, the alleged perpetrator is a learner.

Only two teachers during this time have allegedly raped a learner.

The Western Cape recorded the highest number of rape cases in school with eight cases It is closely followed by the Free State with seven cases and Gauteng on six.

The 61 rape cases in schools are however a drop in the ocean, when compared to the number of rape cases reported across the country. 12 211 rape cases were reported at police stations with three months- an average of 136 per day.

With 2 411 cases, Gauteng reported the highest number of rape case. It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape with 2 140 and 2 096 cases respetively.
